What are hazardous waste drums?

Hazardous waste drums are steel or plastic containers used to store and transport materials classified as dangerous goods or hazardous waste, typically with 205-litre capacities. This durability decreases risk, so that your insurance bill for transit can be less ugly—although no beauty queen. Steel drums are easier to reuse than poly, so they can be a better long-term value. But they have a weight problem, and excess avoirdupois renders them expensive to ship.
  • Polyethylene drums can cost half as much as steel. Being about half the weight, they can also save shipping costs when disposing hazardous waste. They’re particularly indicated for materials capable of corroding metal; and there are many that do, including plain old H20, wherein the “O” part promotes oxidation, which is just a fancy name for rust. Also, water typically has traces of chlorine, a chemical that often doesn’t play well with others—particularly metals. (N.B. Where steel-like durability and anticorrosive properties are called for, look for steel drums lined with polyethylene.)

  • Drums must meet specific manufacturing standards. This includes using UN-certified containers that have passed rigorous testing for durability, leak resistance, and ability to withstand transportation stresses. The drums must display the appropriate UN marking, which includes the UN symbol, packaging code, performance standards, and manufacturer information (see Q.6).
  • Proper classification is required. You must correctly identify the dangerous goods class (e.g., Class 3 for flammable liquids or Class 8 for corrosives) and assign the appropriate UN number and shipping name. This information must appear on shipping documents and labels.

Very carefully. You cannot simply throw hazmat containers into regular waste bins or take them to municipal landfills. Because any drum that once contained hazardous materials is itself considered a hazardous waste thereafter—no matter how empty.

So, the first step in proper hazmat container disposal is determining if the drum can be reconditioned or recycled. If not, it must be disposed of as hazardous waste.

Drums that remain structurally sound and meet UN standards can often be reconditioned by licensed facilities that clean, test, and re-certify them for future use. This is the most environmentally sustainable option and can be cost-effective.
